Bio: Mitochondrion have been booting Canadian buttocks since 2003. After a couple of demos, they released a stunning and disturbing full-length, Archaeaeon, in 2008. They've since released a split album, and more is sure to follow. Their brand of punishing extremity should be enough to chill the coldest indie heart, with a heady and giggly mix of electronica, death metal, black metal, and even an occasional clean interlude. Don't take this for a silly gimmick - the songs are coherent and unrelenting even through the periods of relative calm. As soon as something reveals itself to you, something else will be lurking in the background for the next listen.
Sounds like: A windy, shrieking, electronic hell of flurrying guitars, constantly pounding drums, uncomfortable tempos and ghoulish vocals. Like no other death/black band you'll ever hear, but try Akercocke, Portal or Arkhon Infaustus for something vaguely similar.
Why listen: It's not easy to get into, but once you get over the trebly production and force apart the curtains of electronic noise and unusual song structures, there's genuinely powerful, sinister and enthralling music waiting to disturb you from your tugging.
